This is an in-person program.
In 1882, the Glessners purchased the first 100 acres of their Bethlehem, New Hampshire summer estate, which they christened The Rocks. They completed their home there the next year, and the estate eventually grew to more than 1,500 acres, encompassing farmland, forests, gardens by Frederick Law Olmsted, and a variety of buildings designed by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, Hermann V. von Holst and others. In later years, The Rocks became the permanent home of the Glessners’ two children.
In 1978, Frances Glessner Lee’s children donated 1,400 of the estate to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, a statewide land conservation organization also known as the Forest Society. The Rocks includes sustainably managed forestland, a Christmas tree farm, and the New Hampshire Maple Experience. Operating as Forest Society North at The Rocks, the site offers family-friendly educational programs, walking trails, and an interactive Visitors Center in the historic 1884 carriage barn, now a net-zero facility (with a geothermal system, just like Glessner House!). The Rocks also host school programs, bus tours, weddings and events, and its trails are open to the public from dawn to dusk.
This special program will be presented by Nigel Manley, who managed The Rocks for many years before moving to the role of Senior Outreach Manager in the spring of 2022. Manley will discuss the current operations of The Rocks, and how it has become one of the premier sites managed by the Forest Society, and a treasured part of the New Hampshire landscape.
